Mt. Pisgah Hike

Spent a few hours rambling around in the woods today. Lovely terrain, lots of variety but nothing too steep. The woods are very open, mostly young oak and beech, and there are a couple of nice vantages and streams to enjoy. A very warm day here — in a pre-climate change winter, these woods would been a foot deep in snow at least.

Lynn Woods Loop

For unknown reasons, one of the reservoirs in Lynn is named Walden. If you ever want to circumnavigate it, know that it is larger than the famous Walden Pond in Concord — we did just shy of seven miles yesterday, making this my longest hike to date. It was an utterly gorgeous day, and I was grateful for the chance to be outside.

Apppleton Farms

It has been a rough spring for getting outside, just one thing after another for months. On Sunday, however, we finally got back out to one of the Trustee properties we enjoyed last year. The day was chilly and overcast for mid-June, but we had a nice ramble and saw some cows!

Weir River Farm

I took Wednesday off and drove down to Hingham with a friend so we could visit Weir River Farm and go for a hike. Like all of the Trustees properties I have been to so far, it makes for a pleasant, not too strenuous outing, with nice trails and good views from the hilltop. A rail trail passes through the property via a wetland. Between this and the adjoining property you can get quite a full day’s rambling in.

Weir River Farm, 30 March 2022

It was chilly in the morning, but the day warmed up as it went on. There isn’t much green in the woods yet, just patches here and there. We saw a couple of bluebirds, and an egret in the marsh as we were driving home. Stopped in town on our way back (Hingham is aggressively quaint) and discovered a cheese shop so obviously had to go in there. As days off go, that one will be difficult to beat!

Equinox Hike

Spring has hit the fast-forward button around here, much earlier than would have been considered normal a few decades back. We might yet see cold weather resurge, but crocuses and snowdrops have been followed by daffodils, and the trees are charging full-on into pollen season (unfortunately). I went out for a local group on a five-mile morning trek through the Fells, and the frogs were a loud chorus whenever we passed a vernal pond.
